Giant Banjo Frog

Limnodynastes interioris

Description:

Large globular frog, 90mm. Colour varies from pale yellow/fawn to brown with black flecks and spots on dorsal surface. Has an orange stripe below the eye bordered above with thicker black stripe and also an orange band running down the side of the body. Ventral surface generally a bright yellow. In this case, some colour was lost due to the yellow light of the torch being used to illuminate the subject.

Habitat:

Found crossing a track at night on farmland near Deniliquin, NSW, Australia. Habitat was generally dry and drying out more. This species has quite a limited range in NSW coming south to the Murray River in North Victoria and west of the Great Dividing Range.

Notes:

These guys are a burrowing species and are usually only seen on the the surface after substantial rains. Like the other species of Banjo Frog, it gets its name from its call which sounds like a banjo string being plucked.
