Stingless Bee

Description:

A very small and important wild pollinator of flowers, this Stingless Bee is about 3 mm in length (the weevil next to it, is 2 mm). Notice the stiff bristles and reduced wing venation which are characteristic of the Subfamily Meliponinae, the Stingless Bees. Many actually do have a stinger, but it is reduced in size, as are the bees themselves. These bees are essential to the survival of most native flowering plants.

Habitat:

Rancho Nuevo Park, 10 km east of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.
