Velvet Ant or Cow Killer

Dasymutilla occidentalis (Linnaeus)

Description:

The bug was about an inch in length including the antennae. It has 6 black legs with little barbs on them. The eyes were black. It is a type of wasp. The females are wingless and are coated with thick hairs.

Habitat:

Concrete outdoor classroom at Centre College located in Danville, KY.

Notes:

It was walking along the concrete wall of the outdoor classroom at Centre College. I found it around 1 in the afternoon.
