Green Heron

Butorides virescens

Description:

This juvenile green heron has left their nest for several weeks when I took its photograph. Its diet includes insects , frogs, fish and lizards.

Habitat:

Secondary forest near bodies of water and wetlands.

Notes:

This bird was born on a mango tree just beside our house. When the other two siblings and parents leave their nest, it choose to be left behind. I often see it hunting for lizards ( its favorite food) on the said tree and on the walls and overhang of our roof. Sometimes it comes inside our house through the window to hunt house lizards unmindful of our presence. So, I named him Kevin ( from the movie UP). Sometimes I have to sneak out of him when going to school because he follows me when he sees me get out of the house . I once was tempted to keep him as a pet but then I'm afraid he would lose his natural skills and instinct to take care of himself and someday parting would hurt me. My father and I then take and release him to a nearby wetland so he can join his flock. Now, I still see him come to our place once in a while but kept a distance from us.
