Xylocopa latipes
large carpenter bee with blue compound eyes spotted at southern-westernghats , Tamilnadu ,India. carpenter bees often choose useful structural woods as nesting sites, as they are able to burrow through it with their powerful mandibles. 2nd picture is the nesting site- a dead tree trunk with many bee made holes. 3rd pic - a bee inside the nest, 4th pic shows some dead bees inside the nest.
hi sir, thanks for responding. I dont really do social media, is that a facebook account?
I have a spotting from Sri Lanka of an almost identical looking carpenter bee that my guide called a giant carpenter bee, xylocopa tenuiscapa. Another guy (SachindraUmesh) has one labelled blue-eyed carpenter bee, Xylocopa violacea. so that is three different IDs for what likes to me like the same species. Not sure who might be correct, but I have the most doubt about this one becase when I wiki this scientific name above, the photos show what looks like very different color and shape to the wings.
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
