Asterocampa celtis
Hackberry Emperors can be found feeding on tree sap, carrion, dung, puddles and rotting fruit. They rarely nectar on flowers. They also are attracted to the salts in your sweat and might perch on you allowing very close looks at them.
Carolinian forest
This butterfly was resting on the trunk of a large dead tree at about chest height. It was really settled and didn't move even when I was nearly touching it.
Nice butterfly and series Dan; and great profile with you and Hackberry in it too! Goes with you =)
Greetings
Thanks gator and Lois. I wondered why it was perched upside down. The common name really makes sense, there was a lot of Hackberry in the forest.
They perch upside down on trees. A lot of mine ride around on me when I am gardening. They love to come to rotten banana.
