Resinous Polypore

Ischnoderma resinosum

Description:

Growing from the base of a fallen sugar maple, it has been down for some time, along creek bank. Two specimens, one 12 inches wide the other 10, exuding a milky to amber liquid, no discernible odor, viscosity similiar to water. There has been no recent rain and the creek has not climbed that high on the bank this year.

Habitat:

Riparian

Notes:

This mushroom is said to be edible when young, and is of interest medicinally due to the tumor inhibiting compounds so often found in polypores.
