Small-eyed Snake

Cryptophis nigrescens

Notes:

My husband had a close encounter with this snake while we were camping at Carnarvon Gorge National Park. He was walking in the dark when he felt something brush against his foot... he yelled for me to bring a torch (and the camera) and we found it was this beautiful glossy black snake with a sort of rainbow sheen. It was probably about 80-90cm long although it is hard to tell for sure. Nathan didn't know what it was (very unusual!!) so we did some research at the NPWS Visitor Info Centre the next day and decided it is most likely a Small-Eyed snake. These snakes are secretive and rarely seen, so we felt pretty privileged to have seen it. We also felt privileged that it hadn't bitten Nath, since it is highly venomous (with one recorded fatality) and medical help was a good two-hour drive away!

Thanks Argy. Have you not been to Carnarvon? We saw a lot of wildlife but I still need to put up most of the pics. You have a good chance of seeing platypus in the creek there, although we weren't lucky.
