Calligrapha amator
About the same size as a lady bug -- maybe a tiny bit bigger. I spotted a few of these while walking through the woods, but when I approached with my camera, they pulled in their legs, and dropped into the debris on the forest floor. I eventually found this one, and caught it as it dropped, and put it on my knee for these shots (that's denim in the background).
Maple woods.
Wow, that's awesome!! We have consensus! Thanks everyone! And especially williefromwi!
Upon further study and looking at many more photos, I believe I need to update my ID, I have the species down, but the markings were not quite right so I kept looking and found what I believe to be an exact match, and its from your part of Canada too!!! Calligrapha amator
Calligrapha sp. for sure... Could be ignota...but can we rule out amator or one in the scalaris group? I mean amator (The Ontario Calligrapha) looks remarkably similar also:
