Thanks Mark, yes, its the spots on the wings that I found interesting, there are plenty around and I'd love to find the ID! Im going to investigate that great link!

I can't agree with Stomoxys calcitrans. See part-way down for an entirely different fly http://cal.vet.upenn.edu/projects/parasi... Interestingly the one on Wikimedia is also way off.
