Description:

Listed as 'Vulnerable', these secretive birds are very shy, freezing & squating to the ground when threatened. At night they have the most mournful cry.

Habitat:

Found in open woodland, often near beaches & on offshore islands. This one was quite close to town near a creek.

Apparently only when frightened Alice. I've never seen one fly personally, I've only rarely seen them on the the ground & mostly heard them at night.
