Geastrum triplex
This unusually shape fungus belongs to Geastrum family (Gea = Earth strum = star), Aparently it develops as a ball, recessed in the ground and when opening up it stretches and curves its star shaped ends to raise above, leaving a hole behind and then expelling its spores through one mouth. This is the biggest of the earthstars. reaching up to 12cm Not edible - No comestible
Found beneath Cipress and oaks mountain forest on a very humid and deep humus soil during the mid of the rainy seasson.
Thank you very much, I got carried away because At some site I read that this shape was unique to the M. coliforme, but I too noted that all mine had only one mouth unlike the M. C. Thank you again for the correction.
That's not a M. coliforme. That's a Geastrum species. M. coliforme has several stipes and mouths.
