Sudell's Burrowing Frog

Neobatrachus sudellae

Description:

Small burrowing frog about 40mm SV length. Dorsal surface colour is variable within its range. Here it is mottled greens with black and yellow areas. Skin is lightly granular, with some of the bigger warts having yellow tips. Ventral surface is pale. The snout is short and blunt and the eye has a yellow ring around the lid. No distinct tympanum. Yellow pinstripe running the length of its body (image 3).

Habitat:

Found in southern NSW near Deniliquin on dry grassland station. Often emerging en-masse after rain.

Notes:

First described in 1911 (Lamb) in southern Queensland. For many years was often assumed to be the very similar N. pictus (Painted Frog) but is now recognized as a distinct species. However just to confuse things, there seems to be little to no record of the identity of Sudell.
