Meadow Brown

Maniola jurtina

Description:

A very common butterfly in the UK. The underside has a brown hindwing and orange forewing, with both being paler on the outer half. This particular individual is a female, identified by the large eyespot (males have a much smaller spot). One generation per year, overwinter as larvae. Adults are seen from June to September.

Habitat:

Prefer grasslands, like low-lying plants to roost on. I found this one in a meadow.

Notes:

Apologies for the poor photo, I was still getting to grips with my phone's camera! But it's such a lovely butterfly, I wanted to post it anyway
