Scorpis violacea
Spotted Goat Island Marine Reserve, Leigh, NZ while standing on some rocks. 20-40cm long blue mao mao are most easily recognized by their iridescent blue, a coloration that develops with age. They occur in shoals which, when near the surface, give the water a bright-blue coloration.
Blue Maomao are schooling fish that stay close to the shore. Schools of blue mao mao are common on all North Island rocky shores where they feed on animal plankton and sometimes nibble lush seaweeds when plankton is in short supply
