Yea, it sounds like you are saying pish. It's just a weird noise to the birds, and they sometimes pop up to see what is making the noise. Works well with sparrows, wrens, gnatcatchers, titmice, and chickadees.

I assume it is to make the sound with your mouth?

Haha oh no, please don't do that! Do you know what it means here?

That cracks me up Ashley. The term pish is Scotland is a slang term meaning to urinate. I won't be doing that to the poor birds. LOL!

Most sparrows like to stay hidden. You can get them to pop up if you pish at them, but many run along the ground in tall grass or stay in thick bushed along water or something. We may have more sparrows here in the US too, I'm not too familiar with Australian birds :)

Sparrows are so sweet. Different species, of course, but I don't remember the last time I saw a sparrow in either Sydney of Brisbane. So many droughts over the past couple of decades bring the larger birds into the cities, and the little ones get driven out. I'm sure they're around, but I haven't seen them.

Haha yes! The thing I notice most about them is how gray the face is, most other sparrows have yellow or tan or something on the face
