Cardinalis cardinalis
Having spent many years on the East Coast, cardinals are fairly common. I was surprised to find a spotting, however, in the Sonoran Desert, just west of Tucson, AZ. In checking my references, they live year-round in southeast/south central Arizona up to the northwest to the Colorado River. The males in this area have larger more prominent crests than found in other parts of the country.
This was spotted in the Sonoran Desert in the Tucson Mountain Park.
