red-bellied woodpecker (male)

Melanerpes carolinus

Description:

A medium-sized woodpecker of eastern North American deciduous forests.

Habitat:

Backyard balcony suet feeder in residential neighborhood, Springfield, Missouri, USA.

Notes:

A European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) "competes" (--that is their nature!) with the woodpecker for the suet. But perhaps unexpectedly, the woodpecker prevails in this battle.
