Pileated woodpecker

Hylatomus pileatus

Description:

The longleaf pine forests that buffer the 400,000-acre Okefenokee Swamp are chock-full of woodpeckers and this pileated woodpecker was abundant in the swamp and really enjoyed watching it peck away. It is the largest woodpecker in the United States. I just love its hairdo--so spiked.

Habitat:

Okefenokee Swamp, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Stephen C Foster State Park, Fargo, Georgia.

I've never seen one. Lots of squarking parrots down here in Oz, but no woodpeckers.

Thanks Neil. I would walk the swamp trail every morning just to see this woodpecker.
