Cathartes aura
Large bird with dark brown/black plumage. The adults have a bald redish/ pink head while the juveniles have black fuzzy heads!
I was excited to spot six vultures perched in a tree near a freshly killed deer. Here are photos of one of the adults and one of the juvenile vultures!

Thank you Mac!
Great pics Emily
Thank you Christy and Smith'sZoo!
Thank you LisaPowers! How exciting! ...and I might add what a wonderful blog posting today! I adore vultures! I have had the true pleasure of working closely with turkey vultures in a rehabilitation facility I volunteer for. These cunning birds have continued to amaze me with how intelligent, curious and trusting they are!
They will grumble at you and stomp their feet when they first see you. However, literally within minutes of being with them they settle down and start to trust and investigate. More so than some of the other raptors, they almost seem to enjoy the company and the interaction.
Great shot Emily!
Congrats Em on the Blog bit!! ;-)
Congratulations! Your photo was selected for use in todays' blog on Vultures!

Superb series
Dang amazing shots! The turkey vultures I live with don't ever get that close to me!
Thank you Satyen and Phil! He flew right next to me, I'd say within 5 feet of me at eye level. That is how I got such a great first shot!
Great pics!
Wonderful series and great first shot!
Fantastic shots, Emily!! The in-flight one is so clear! They're so neat-looking! (he's not Chuck though!!) ;-)
Thanks Ray2! I just love these guys! They will be leaving Colorado soon for warner weather in South America. Glad I got a few descent shots this year before they are gone!
Great in flight photo
