Crested Serpent Eagle

Spilornis cheela

Description:

Large bird of prey. Seems to have a crest of ruffled feathers. Dark colour. Bands on tail.

Habitat:

We were driving from Negombo to Habanara when I saw something sitting on the electric line...very far away. from the edge of the highway. Stopped the car and walked back a bit. The sun was not optimally placed for good photography but I took some snaps nonetheless. The bird sat like a log of wood...and it was not till in the shade of the car that I realized that it was really an impressive species.

Thanks, Chief. I will check.

Hi Sukanya, the white banded short tail and the stout head shows that it could be a crested serpent eagle (Spilornis cheela).
