Eastern Wild Turkey

Meleagris gallopavo silvestris

Description:

These are very mature Eastern Wild Turkeys. You can tell they are males because of the long beards, which also provides an estimate of their age. The males are usually called gobblers because they gobble to attract females and to warn away competing males. Their feathers are dominantly shades of brown with blue and red heads/necks.

Habitat:

They prefer hardwoods and open fields to walk over in search of bugs, acorns, berries, and other food sources, and tend to roost over streams, river branches, etc.
