Bay lavender, sea lavender, beach heliotrope

Mallotonia gnaphalodes

Description:

Type: Shrub Hardiness range: 10B - 11 Height: 24" to 4' / 60cm to 1.20m Spread: 6' to 10' / 1.80m to 3.00m Growth rate: Slow Exposure: Full sun Persistence: Evergreen, broadleaf Bloom color: White Bloom season: Fall and Winter Leaf color: Blue Fruit color: Black Sea lavender is one of the best adapted small shrubs or tall ground covers for the seaside landscape. Its pubescent, silvery foliage is borne in tufts toward the ends of branches. Small white flowers are produced year-round among the developing leaves. Despite their small size, their abundance allows them to provide a nice showy display. Plants grow slowly, eventually reaching about 5 feet tall. Many are smaller than this when exposed to direct salt spray, but they often grow very wide.

Habitat:

Top of beach between sand and scrubby growth near Cow Wreck Beach, Anegada, BVI.
