Lophodytes cucullatus
The hooded merganser is the smallest of the three types of merganser found in North America. The male has a black and white head with a large crest, yellow eyes, and a black beak. His back and chest are black and white while the sides and hind portion of the male merganser are brown. The female is a gray-brown color with a reddish tint and also has a crest on her head. She has an orange beak and brown eyes.
Hooded mergansers prefer wooded wetland habitats where they nest in tree cavities where they lay an average of 9-11 eggs. They feed on small fish, insects, and other aquatic crustaceans.
