Winged Male Ant (alate)

Description:

A small narrow-waisted black insect about 6 mm long. Wings were clear except for a single black spot on the leading edge. Venation seemed simple. Antennae looked beaded. Eyes relatively large.

Habitat:

Suburban garden

Notes:

My thanks to Ken Walker & Kate Sandiford for their help with identifying this insect as a winged ant.
Kate Sandiford says : "A winged reproductive (therefore an alate). But this is a male ant: small head, small mandibles and (relatively) non-elbowed antennae."
It closely resembles Pheidole species. Need to investigate further.
Family: Formicidae
