That spikey head and the lighter spines around it were a big help with finding the ID for this one. Very cool caterpillar!

Very pretty caterpillar! It looks to me like a stinging caterpillar. If so, combined with the fact that it was found in North Carolina, it's most likely a buck moth caterpillar. The orange color is unusual, but the picture I referenced above also has orange in it. If you browse bugguide or elsewhere, you'll see a fair bit of color variation, but the stingers are distinctive.
