Wahlberg's epauletted fruit bat

Epomophorus wahlbergi

Description:

Brown or buffy brown, with the underparts lighter, and the head slightly darker than the rest of the body. Bothe sexes have white patches at the base of the ears, but only the males have white epaulette patches on their shoulders, which cover a scent gland.(Smithers' mammals of southern africa a field guide. fourth edition)

Habitat:

They were part of a large colony... counted about 40... on a large tree in a lodge just next to the beach

Notes:

The evening we arrived at the lodge I was standing under a tree, when an enormous colony took flight, scaring me to death. The next morning I went to search for them armed with a camera and they happily watched me, posing without protesting. :)

yes afriBats, I was very in doubt while trying to recognize it... I also considered asking the local hotel manager but he didn't even know he had a bat colony in his garde...
