They have a characteristic threat display, rubbing sections of their body together to produce a "sizzling" warning sound. Relatively small in size, the adults are never larger than about 90 cm (35 in) in length
Species of this genus are found in Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka, parts of the Middle East and Africa north of the equator.
