White-Marked Tussock Moth Caterpillar

Orgyia leucostigma

Description:

A small (roughly 1 inch long) fuzzy caterpillar. He is yellow and white and with black antennae and defense mechanisms on his rear. He has four groups of 'bristles' on his back. His face is bright red.

Habitat:

They have a wide range, but this one was found in the Corkscrew Swamp - part of the Florida Everglades

Notes:

These caterpillars are venomous! There were a rather large number of them in one particular part of the swamp.

Found one in our backyard about 150 feet from the Jones Swap located in Beaverdam, Virginia

There were two on my front porch yesterday here in Salem, SC. I had no clue what it was. I've never seen one like this before. Thank you for the info.
