Widefooted Tree Hopper

Description:

Order: Homoptera, Suborder: Auchenorrhyncha, Infraorder: Cicadomorpha, Subfamily: Membracoidea, Family: Membracidae. Size: 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) Odd looking thorn-like brown hopper, camouflaged well in plant environment. Brown in color with "horn" on head. Wide leaf-like front legs. Large eyes for overall size. Species often tended by ants as ants eat the honeydew the hoppers expel from their anuses. Adults have sucking parts and feed on juices of plants such as tickseed and asters.

Habitat:

Meadow with abundant flowers and weeds (goldenrod)

Notes:

Wheel Bug (Arilus cristatus) 1.25 inches long, with bee in 2nd photo. I couldn't get anymore clear photos. Very cloudy and about to rain. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/149...

By the way, the second picture is really interesting, you should put it as a different spot.

Hi Carol. Membracids are no longer considered on Hemiptera order. Insted they belong to Homoptera order.
