Orange-Brown Scarab

Chondropyga gulosa

Description:

An attractive 25 mm long beetle with a slightly flattened broad body. The elytra looked like freshly polished wood with dark streaks at the shoulder and apices. The broad thorax was mostly black with orange lateral borders. The abdominal segments visible on the sides were a bright yellow. Antennae had leaflets.

Habitat:

Spotted on the ground in a partly dry sclerophyll forest. It was trying its best to hide under some moss.

Notes:

Eggs are laid in wood debris and larvae develop feeding on rotting wood.
