Black Scoter

Melanitta americana

Description:

Slightly larger than the Surf Scoter. Males are solid black including the bill with an orange-yellow large knob on the top of the bill. Of the 3 Scoters it is the only one with dark eyes. When swimming it sits higher than the others too most of the time. Noticed when they were giving a call, they raise their neck and tail.

Habitat:

During the winter a few are spotted in bay.
