Lofornis Ornatus
This is the female of the tufted coquette and is part of the hummingbird family, although she is not much bigger than a large bee (6cm) and very rarely stops when feeding on the nectar of small flowers. the female is unfortunately the one without the tuft but is still a very beautiful and fascinating tiny bird to watch.
An inhabitant of Trinidad, Guyana and Northern Brazil in open country and gardens mostly feeding on nectar and small invertebrates.
Could easily be mistaken for a large South American bee due to its size and how fast its wings beat.

Thanks Karen and Eva. They are very fast and hard to photograph and this one hardly ever stopped but I got lucky and it stopped where my lens was pointing for a second
Great pictures! I tried very hard to see the hummingbirds going to the feeders in Honduras. The were very fast and hard to photograph.
beautiful
this was at the Asa Wright nature centre in Trinidad, there were several species of hummingbirds within inches of your nose!! well worth a visit!
Where can I see one of these? Looks amazing.
