Greenhouse Frog

Eleutherodactylus planirostris

Description:

This specimen was lured out of hiding by using a small wireless speaker and a recording of the call of a male Eleutherodactylus planirostris. Several individuals appeared to be attracted, this one showed the most interested and stayed close to the speaker for some time.

Habitat:

Damp soil, gardens, and urban greenhouses.

Notes:

Greenhouse frogs do not require standing water, the eggs are enclosed in a thick, tough membrane and are often laid in topsoil, leaf litter, and under fallen logs. The young frogs emerge from the egg as fully formed juveniles, having gone through the tadpole stage while still within the egg membrane.
