Haliaeetus leucocephalus
Juvenile bald eagle at three different locations on uncovering tidal flats
Temperate Pacific coastal estuarine ecosystem
Spotted in the Quatse River estuary south of Port Hardy BC; the tide was ebbing at the time the images were recorded, hundreds of salmon were swimming upstream to spawn and many birds had gathered for a fish dinner; imaged at maximum zoom using a point-and-shoot digital camera
Thanks for the invitation. I've added this spotting--and a couple of others--to the mission.
Nice spotting!! I'd love you to add this to the mission Raptors of North America: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627...
Not a Golden Eagle - they have much smaller bills and in all plumages have a bright golden nape.
Thanks Sara. What distinguishing characteristics told you this is a juvenile? I can think of some possible clues: the white mottling in the plumage, that the neck was not yet "gold," or apparent size. Was it one or more of these?
