Red-Shafted Northern Flicker

Colaptes auratus

Description:

Medium-sized woodpecker, these were spotted outside Flagstaff, AZ. The second photo above shows two male Flickers, who appeared to be facing off, looking upward, and weaving back and forth, at times almost "belly-bumping." This was taken in early spring, so I would assume they were vying for a mate, territory, or both. There was a female in the area.

Habitat:

Wooded areas, urban and country. I have spotted these birds in the pines, as well as riparian areas in the desert.
