Cyclochila australasiae
THE hills and trees around here are alive with the sound of insect music, and this year the volume is turned all the way up to 16. Cicadas have emerged from underground dwellings to begin their annual summer chorus - that shrill, pulsing call which at close range pummels eardrums harder than an industrial jackhammer, a chainsaw or even a dreaded vuvuzela horn. It's so load here that we have to go inside sometimes.
