Tachinid Fly

Protodejeania sp., possibly P. echinata

Description:

A large fly with an orange abdomen and heavy black spines. About 1.3 cm long. The wings are dark and the face distinctly white. They are usually very fast and are seen at flowers, this one was on the ground and weak. Family Tachinidae.

Habitat:

Semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

This is a parasitoid of Tussock Moth larvae, but interestingly deposits its eggs on the moth host plant foliage, where the larvae can come into contact with the eggs of the fly. (https://books.google.com.mx/books?id=WgG...)
