Himalayan Lantern

Agapetes serpens

Description:

Rather fuschia-like but not really the garden fuschias I have seen. The tiny birds loved these flowers; so must be nectar-rich.

Habitat:

We were walking up to the Neora Valley Jungle Camp from lower down the Village Kolakham which is a remote, forested area at an altitude of 1868m in the Kalimpong Hills of Darjeeling District, on the fringes of Neora Valley National Park. The hillside was festooned with these flowers but never at my eye-level.

Notes:

Its Latin or taxonomic name means Beloved. I saw it growing wild but apparently it is grown as an exotic ornamental too.
