White Turtlehead

Chelone glabra

Description:

Herbaceous 2-3 ft. tall plant in the plantain family (Plantaginaceae) with opposite, oblong leaves that are serrated. Flowers growing in spikes are two-lipped and white to pink, deepening to purple towards the tips. Their resemblance to turtleheads is reflected in the genus name "chelone," which is greek for "tortoise."

Habitat:

At the base of a ridge along a drainage path beside a dirt road. Surrounded by leaf litter and branches.
