Mass deaths of animals, including birds, fish and mammals are not uncommon, and they are attributed to a number of different causes including abnormal weather, disease, poisoning and fireworks, amongst others. A quick Google search will come up with links citing many different cases, including the one mentioned.

That is very strange, I have never heard anything likeit before... though I am sure it has happened more than just this once.

Recently came across a story about a mass death of 3,000-5,000 of these birds in a town on New Year's Eve several years ago due to blunt trauma initiated by a fireworks display. The fireworks display scared them out of their roosts and they are basically blind at night. Talk about a bad combination.
