Plumeria

Plumeria rubra

Description:

Five-petalled flower of white with yellow center. Grows on small trees that bloom before the leaves emerge.

Habitat:

Tropical rainforest garden, both on the rainy and dry sides of the Hawaiian islands.

Notes:

Originally planted in cemeteries as it is in southeast Asia, Hawaiians took a while before they began using it to make leis. The flowers are intensely fragrant, especially at night.

Thanks! The second was taken during one of those incredible tropical rainstorms that are characteristic of Hilo area.
