Dendrobatidae, Ranitomeya reticulata
This is a small (just less than an inch in length) frog. It is very colorful, a trait exhibited in a number of species which flags to predators its distasteful or poisonous traits. The "poison dart" name derives from indigenous people's use of the poison from this species to tip their darts...thus making them more potent.
This frog was spotted in the Amazon rain forest, Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. Our local guide picked it up out of some leaves which were wet from nightly rain. The guide did not seem to be concerned about the toxicity of the frog, as he held it for viewing. We were happy to look, photo, but not touch.
Bayucca...thanks for the information. I could not find a complete scientific name in my references, so your comment was a big help. I updated with your information.
