Knobbed Whelk

Busycon carica

Description:

Egg case with hundreds of tiny baby whelks! They were still alive and looked healthy. They exit through the holes in the sides of their chambers. This egg case apparently came loose from wherever it was anchored and washed ashore. I put it back in the water, but wasn't sure that would do any good.

Habitat:

Found on the Ocean Isle end of Sunset Beach, NC, next to a tidal pool. It was near low tide.

An amazing spotting. I've never seen anything like it. Wonderful photo series too :)
