Picoides villosus
The middle of the back and underside of the throat to the tail are white. The male's head is black and white striped with a red spot behind. The beak is long and we see hairs (vibrissae) at the base. The white feathers under the tail have no black point. Both sexes are similar, apart from the red spot behind the head, exclusive to the male.
Lives mainly in forests and parks, can be seen in the suburbs. Present throughout Québec, except the Far North.
White feathers under the tail without black dots can be distinguished from the Downy Woodpecker.
