Fox Sparrow

Passerella iliaca

Description:

The eastern population of Fox Sparrows is the "red" form like this one. These are large sparrows, mostly rusty red colored with gray on the face and a white breast with red checks.

Notes:

Our Fox Sparrows are migrating through now to their breeding grounds in northern Canada. It's always a pleasure seeing them, and this was just one of 6 birds feeding under my feeders and in the leaf litter at the edge of the woods.

Thanks James. It helps when I can get fairly close to the bird.

This is a lovely and interesting spotting. To make it complete, and useful to researchers using this site for data, please edit this and add a reference (Wikipedia, Encyclopedia of Life, something else) about this species in the reference field of your spotting. Please do this for each photo you post. Thanks for helping to make Project Noah a complete reference tool for scientists.
