Spotted Salamander

Ambystoma maculatum

Description:

Adult male spotted under a log along the edge of a vernal pool in the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, MD. During the breeding season, the cloaca (just past the hind limbs) of male Ambystoma are enlarged, while the cloaca of females remain smaller. The enlarged cloaca of this male can be clearly seen in the 3rd photo.

Habitat:

Found throughout eastern North America. Adults are rarely seen because they spend most of their time hiding in leaf litter, under fallen wood, or in tunnels below ground.
