Dryad's Saddle

Polyporus squamosus

Description:

Very large irregularly shaped carpophores; the cap is depressed, and the growth seem to have adopted the shape of the log while descending it, and then forming a platform. These two were some 50 cm or more in diameter. Attractive colors, brownish above, with dark scales or squamules, whitish underneath, with large pores. Spongy flesh on touch.

Habitat:

Growing on a fallen log, on edge of a grassland, in shade of trees on banks of a stream.

Notes:

Apparently edible when young; recommended to be cooked in small pieces over a low heat.
