Spinus tristis
The American goldfinch is a small bird that is only 4 - 5 inches in length and has a wingspan of only about 8 inches. In the winter months it is a drab grayish-brown with a bit of dull yellow about the wings. In the spring the male brightens to a bold yellow. American goldfinches molt two times per year, one time in late winter and again in late summer. Breeding season is in June and July.
Goldfinches can be found throughout the United States in fields and wetland areas, where thistle plants are present. They can also be found along roadsides and at backyard feeders.
