Blue-winged Grasshopper

Oedipoda caerulescens

Description:

Well camouflaged grasshopper, whose visible color depend on a substrate where they develop - as seen here; they melt into the ground... I actually noticed them when they jumped or flew - thanks to their bright blue hind wings; it looked a bit like flashes of bright blue lights against the dried-grass colors of the pastures. Female are bigger, about 3 cm in length (all photos), while males are visibly smaller (pics N° 1 to 3, two of them).

Habitat:

Seen on pastures on hills located just in between the Jura mountain range and Geneva lake.
